Chapter 7

The feel of her leg pressed tightly against his, Joseph wondered if it was possible to run with a raging erection in his shorts. It turned out, yes, it was, but it wasn’t easy. Or comfortable. And none of that mattered because the soft, smooth skin of Saryn’s leg so closely interwoven with his was the closest he would ever get to being with her in the intimate way he longed for.

The rope that bound their calves and thighs brought them closer together than he ever thought they’d be. Not just physically either, but standing there, waiting for their turn in the relay race, it gave them a chance to talk. Really talk. And not about work stuff. It made him feel alive again. It made him feel young.

The sound of her heavy breathing, paired with her laughter, so light and giggly, her sweaty flesh rubbing his, he was so close to cumming he could feel his face begin to flush. Those noises, he’d never heard anything so arousing in his life. All he could picture was her naked body beneath his.

“Here they come,” Saryn yelled, slapping her face a couple times in preparation. “You ready to run your ass off? Don’t make me run across the finish line with your head in my hands. I don’t want to, but I will.”

“I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised,” he retorted with a wink. “This old man still hits the gym.”

“Well then let’s see what you got. Go, go!”

In her family, winning was what mattered, and being the runt of the bunch, there wasn’t much she could beat them at. When winning is everything, and you can’t do it, it makes you feel like nothing. And over and over again throughout her life, she was made to feel like nothing. Good but never the best. There was always someone better, someone hotter, someone more qualified, until Travis gave her his pizza and changed everything. She was used to losing, and truthfully, it didn’t really matter anymore, not after winning his heart, but she still hated it with a passion.

Until all of a sudden, she didn’t anymore. With every step closer to the finish line, it mattered less and less. The race, the promotion, the need to reach a level of success that counted as success in the eyes of her family. She had all she needed, she had since that day at the pizza place. Anything else was icing on the cake.

A smile crept over her face before she exchanged a look with the owner of her magazine and kicked it into high gear. Because what good is a cake without any icing?

Joseph spent his entire life letting down his kids, his wife, always putting something else first, usually something involving him. Yes, he said it was so they could lead a better life, and it was, but above all else, it was to prove he could do it. Not just to himself but to the world. And he proved it, time and time again, in whatever he did, except being a family man.
